The Stapedius Reflex: Beyond its Visually Observable Binary On/Off Behavior
نویسندگان
چکیده
Visually, the stapedius reflex is an on/off phenomenon that either appears or not. However, this paper presents some additional data that suggests a rather continuous stapedius reflex that above a certain threshold, leads to progressively increasing forces of the stapedius muscle. With this effect, the stapedius reflex can be used not only for the initial calibration of the cochlear implant’s speech processor but also for its continuous re-calibration.

About Electromyographic Signals and the Automatic Detection of the Stapedius Reflex
Cochlear implants help regain the auditory sense in cases where the cochlea is not able to transform the sound signals into electric stimulation for the auditory cortex. By their very nature, cochlear implants require a calibration process, which is often based on the electrically evoked stapedius reflex threshold (ESRT), since it very well correlates with a person's most comfortable loudness l...
متن کاملAutomatic Detection of the Electrical Elicited Stapedius Reflex by Evaluation of Its Electromyographic Signals
This paper provides a first preliminary description of the dependencies between the stapedius muscle’s behavior and its neuronal activation with the adjustment of cochlear implants in mind. For that, stapedial electromyography (EMG) data are compared with EMG data which were derived from the quadriceps femoris muscle. The rationale behind is, that the stapedius muscle is classified as a striate...
متن کاملStapedius reflex measurements during surgery for cochlear implantation in children.
Electrically evoked stapedius reflex measurements were obtained in 19 children during surgery for cochlear implantation. They all received the Nucleus device. Stapedius reflexes could be elicited in all the children with congenital deafness but not in all the children with an etiology of meningitis. The intraoperative stapedius reflex thresholds were compared with postoperative values obtained ...
متن کاملThe Relationship Between Reaction Time of Electrical Stapedius Reflex and Auditory Performance in Cochlear-Implanted Children
Background: A common concern in some cochlear-implanted children is the lack of desired progress in auditory and listening skills. Such a concern remains despite proper verbal processor programming, additional disabilities, and continuous participation in hearing rehabilitation programs. A more detailed assessment of pathways and centers of the auditory processing at the lower end of the brain ...
متن کاملCan stapedius reflex testing objectively measure muscle function in Pompe patients?
We assessed the value of stapedius reflex testing as an objective measurement of striated muscle function in four patients with Pompe disease. Common tests of disease severity and efficacy of enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) yield highly variable results that depend on patient cooperation and day-to-day performance, whereas stapedius reflex thresholds improved in seven of eight ears after 2 yea...
